Project Kar Kulture, DSK (2013)
The Kar-Kulture project was a multi objective assignment, that dived into the world of Hot-Rods, Custom Cars and Specials. It allowed each member of the mixed skill set team (Designers and Digital Designers) to get the most out of it.
Before explaining the project, EMD would like to thank the team for their great work and attitude. It was lots of fun. The team were made up of:
Advait NAIR, Jaykishen LAKHANI, Atish KHADE, Shivendra SINGH and Gurpreet SINGH (Team Leader)
The students had to study the different cultures and sub-cultures that make up the Hot-Rod and Custom scene, choose a base car that would then be modified, create a very accurate CAD model of the base car and then model in 3D the new modified car from it, based on a Car Culture direction of their choice.
The Designers had to use their Custom Car and Hot-Rod knowledge to design the Exterior and Interior.
Lastly, based on computer-generated images, the team had to produce highly convincing 'in-situation' photorealistic imagery.
However fun this project looks, there were a number of real objectives for the students and hopefully an interesting project for EMD. The students certainly delivered!
The first objective was to have something different and eye catching in their portfolios that would allow them to talk passionately about the project and strike a chord with the person interviewing them.
With new design schools flourishing around the world and an even greater number of young graduates looking for that all important first job, it's vital to have a great portfolio, that not only shows technical skill, but imagination and passion.
There is an enormous amount of portfolio cross-pollination and influence between schools, countries and car design web sites, to the point that it is very hard to say where a student has come from. There is almost a “world-style” and students' portfolios reflect this.
Also, many of the Design Directors have a real passion for Hot Rods, Custom Cars and Classics where the best cars are truly rolling automotive forms of art.
A number of OEM concept cars have also featured strong Hot-Rod influences and the Effigy by GM is the absolute homage to custom cars.
